Frontera NorteSur: The parents of Esmeralda Castillo Rincon recently heard sad news about their long-disappeared daughter. The 14-year-old had been missing from her Ciudad Juarez home since 2009, and the parents had waged a long campaign demanding her safe return.
On January 16, however, the Chihuahua state prosecutor's office (FGECH) notified Jose Luis Castillo and his wife, Martha Rincon, that Esmeralda's remains were among those of other female murder victims recovered from the Navajo Arroyo in the Juarez Valley bordering the United States in 2012 and 2013.

Monarch butterflies rebound 69 percent in Mexico, but numbers still dangerously low
AP: The World Wildlife Fund says the number of Monarch butterflies that reached wintering grounds in Mexico has rebounded 69 percent from last year's lowest-on-record levels.
Last year, the Monarchs covered only 1.65 acres (0.67 hectares), the smallest area since record-keeping began in 1993. Read more.

Mexico shuts down planned Chinese trade center near Cancun
AP: Authorities shut down a huge trade center development near the resort city of Cancun on Monday that was conceived as a showcase for Chinese products and had previously been fined over $1 million for environmental damage.
Mexico's environmental protection agency said in a statement that the Dragon Mart Cancun project was "totally shuttered" over failure to comply with corrective measures ordered last year and the removal of vegetation related to construction. The statement said the agency determined the project was being built in a coastal ecosystem where mangrove stands are present. Read more.

Mexican Drug Cartels Are Using Magnets To Create Unwitting Mules
Business Insider: Drug smugglers are turning "trusted travelers" into unwitting mules by placing containers with powerful magnets under their cars in Mexico and then recovering the illegal cargo far from the view of border authorities in the United States.
One motorist spotted the containers while pumping gas after crossing into Southern California on Jan. 12 and thought it might be a bomb. Read more.

Reuters: The state-owned petroleum giant Pemex paid $9 million in 2011 to have an oil rig towed halfway round the world, from the United Arab Emirates to the Gulf of Mexico. When government auditors looked at the contract, they turned up some problems.
