Drug Kingpin Extradition Highlights Dispute Over Mexico's Drug War Sovereignty | AHN: ... U.S. control over the reach of the law is worrying Mexican politicians. They are concerned the U.S. government is starting to trample their sovereignty.

Much of the U.S. support for Mexico’s efforts comes from the Merida Initiative, a 2008 treaty in which the United States agreed to give Mexico $1.6 billion and military equipment and training to support its drug war that started in December 2006. The Merida Initiative is due to expire in December unless Congress extends it.

Members of Mexico’s Congress are concerned the United States will condition any future funding under the Merida Initiative on a U.S. military presence. Sept. 10, 2010, All Headline News
