Mexican Politics: Editorial from La Jornada: Central America Confronts Mexican Deterioration

Here is a translation of an editorial, in La Jornada, a leading Mexican newspaper, that calls the Mexican government to account for its failure to protect Central American migrants crossing its territory. The analysis links a decline in the government's control of public safety to its loss of control of the economic sector due the imposition of neo-liberal economic policies (required as loan conditions by the U.S. and World Bank), which occurred in the 1970´s, 80's and 90´s. The editorial does not relate the loss of control of safety to the loss of control at all levels of government by PRI, the ruling party, during this same time period.

Editorial from La Jornada: Central America Confronts Mexican Deterioration "... the Mexican government has no moral authority to complain about the degrading treatment its countrymen undergo in the U.S., when the same abuses, or worse, are committed here against citizens of other countries. Having the authority does not guarantee the fulfillment of the rights of this group, but this omission is not the most grave. To this must be added the abuses by the authorities themselves and cases of collusion between officials and gangs dedicated to the trafficking of persons. This circumstance, in short, places the Mexican government in a position of disgrace and shame in front of the world." Sept. 4, 2010.
