Activist from Juarez seeks asylum in El Paso | AP Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "A human rights activist from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, says she fears being murdered and wants asylum in the United States.
Cipriana Jurado will have her asylum hearing on Wednesday in El Paso. The 46-year-old activist left Juarez after her friend and fellow human rights activist Josefina Reyes was shot dead in January. Several of Reyes' relatives have been murdered since.
In a news release Monday by the Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, she said, "There is no doubt that I would be next if I stayed in Mexico."Jurado and Reyes had been outspoken opponents of them Mexican government's decision to militarize Juarez. She founded of the Center for Information and Solidarity for Working Women in the 1990's as a resource for apparel factory female workers."
