Globalization and the Immigration Crackdown: Mexican Women face crisis on Arizona border

A detailed look at the impact of the border crackdown on Mexican women - both those who try to cross and those who stay behind at maquiladora factories.

Puma Press: "A green and rusted metal wall snakes its way through the center of Nogales, dividing the city in half — this house in Mexico, that business in the U.S. The southern face of the wall is covered with artwork — paint and stainless steel reminders of people who have died crossing to the other side. The art stands as both a memorial and a warning to others who dream of a better life.

Thousands of men and women from Latin America climb the wall and cross into the U.S. illegally each year. They face arrest by the border patrol, abuse by human traffickers and even death in the Arizona desert. What would compel them to risk so much or cause a woman to drag her children on such a dangerous journey?
Mexican women are in crisis due, in part, to the poverty and severed family ties created by the unintended consequences of the North American Free Trade Agreement and to increased border security in response to the terrorist attack on Sept. 11 2001."
