Immigration Reality: StoryCorps to Collect Stories of Immigrants to N.Y.

StoryCorps to Collect Stories of Immigrants to N.Y. - NYTimes.com: "StoryCorps, an oral history group that has recorded thousands of Americans telling stories about summer camp, their parents and the road trip they took that year after college, will be setting up booths across the city this week to record New Yorkers sharing stories on a single topic: immigration.

The nonprofit organization is working with the mayor’s office to collect stories of the journeys people made from every corner of the world to arrive in New York. For some, the move happened generations ago. For others, the city is still a new, bewildering place.

StoryCorps is hoping to hear the entire range of the life-changing experience — the joys, challenges, losses and accomplishments tied up with leaving your home forever to settle someplace new. Through the stories, the mayor’s office and StoryCorps aim to help immigrants and their descendants share their cultural values and traditions with the public."
