¡Viva Mexico!: Chekhov thrives in Mexico

A review of a play at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago about life in Mexico. It reflects the increasing interweaving of the worlds of Mexico and the U.S. Among other facts, a million Mexicans live in Chicago.

Chekhov thrives in Mexico - Chicago Sun-Times: "As anyone who has ever tended a garden knows, the transplanting process can be a tricky undertaking. But something wonderfully rich and redolent is growing in “El Nogalar” (“The Pecan Orchard”), now in its world premiere at the Goodman Theatre. Playwright Tanya Saracho has deftly uprooted “The Cherry Orchard,” the seminal early 20th century work by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, and moved house, garden and all variety of hothouse humans into the blood, drugs and corruption-tainted soil of contemporary northern Mexico. And the result could not be more invigorating — like adding chili peppers to chocolate."
