Viva Mexico!: The last sacred figure in Mexico - The Virgin of Guadalupe

A wonderful introduction to the "Mother of Mexico." From a Canadian newspaper.

The last sacred figure in Mexico - The Virgin of Guadalupe: "They used to be known as Los Tres Intocables — The Three Untouchables — and everyone in Mexico knew exactly who they were. The president. The army. And the Virgin of Guadalupe.

You could criticize anyone or anything in the land, but you left the Untouchables alone. Those used to be the rules a la mexicana, but much in this country has changed during the past 20 years or so.

There is democracy now, and even presidents have to suffer the slings and arrows of partisan debate, just as other mortals do. And the army? The once well-respected Mexican military has taken a public-relations drubbing for its heavy-handed role in this country’s bloody war on drugs.

As a result, it seems nowadays that only the Virgin of Guadalupe remains standing — supreme, irreproachable, inviolate."
