Old Cartels Never Really Die…

FSN News: Despite recurrent pronouncements of death by some U.S. and Mexican officials, high-profile organized crime groups continue operating and shedding blood south of the border. Tijuana, where control of both the local and export drug business is the prize of contention, figures once again as a significant flashpoint of violence.

Mexico extradites Eduardo Arellano Felix to US

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Mexico extradited Eduardo Arellano-Felix to the United States Friday, marking what one U.S. official said was the end of a 20-year investigation into the once-mighty drug cartel headed by his older brother.

Arellano Felix, 55, arrived in the United States and will make an initial court appearance Tuesday in San Diego on charges of narcotics trafficking, racketeering and money laundering, said Laura Duffy, the U.S. attorney in San Diego, who built her career on the case.

A 2003 federal indictment calls Eduardo Arellano Felix "the senior advisor" to his older brother, Benjamin, who headed the Tijuana, Mexico-based organization from its beginnings in the 1980s until his arrest in 2002 in Mexico. In April, Benjamin Arellano Felix was sentenced to 25 years in prison in San Diego after being extradited last year. Read more.

U.S. Officials Hail Sentencing Of Tijuana Cartel Leader, But Drug War Far From Over

KPBS.org: " A U.S. federal judge on Monday sentenced Benjamín Arellano-Felix, the former leader of the Tijuana drug trafficking cartel, to 25 years in prison. Arellano-Felix was also ordered to forfeit $100 million in profits.

Benjamín Arellano-Felix ran the Tijuana cartel, or Arellano-Felix Organization, from the mid-1980s until his arrest in Mexico in 2002. The Arellano-Felix family controlled the flow of drugs across Mexico’s northwest border into California, considered perhaps the country's most lucrative drug trafficking territory, or plaza. The drug leader is thought to have ordered scores of murders in Baja California and elsewhere in Mexico." read more
