Vargas Llosa calls for legalization of drugs-Poder 360°: "The Nobel prizewinner for literature in 2010, Mario Vargas Llosa (of Peru) told a press conference Monday in Stockholm that he believes the only way to end the violence in Mexico is by legalizing drugs. Vargas Llosa,74, who will receive the Nobel prize on Friday, praised the Mexican government for its efforts to combat drug traffickers, but said it was a futile battle. 'I believe the Mexican government has acted with great courage, trying to combat (drug trafficking) with great toughness,' he said.
'What has been demonstrated is that drug trafficking cannot be defeated by purely repressive policies, and drugs need to be decriminalized,' he added. 'Drugs have to be legalized and all the huge sums of money that currently are invested in their repression, should be put into treatment, prevention and education, as has been done for example in the case of tobacco, with great success.'"
