KYMA News 11... Yuma, AZ/El Centro, CA: "It's the latest crackdown on Mexico's drug war. From coast to coast, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided businesses, homes, and streets in search of gang members who may be tied to Mexican drug cartels. On top of drugs, agents found weapons and money during the roundup known as Project Southern Tempest.
John Morton, U.S. director for ICE, said, 'The results were welcome news for public safety and the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime. We arrested 678 gang members and their associates from 133 gangs.'
ICE officials call it a big step in the agency's mission to stop criminal activity on both sides of the border. Morton said, "The 678 arrests made through this latest operation bring us to an important milestone. Our 20,000 arrest of a gang member or associate since we began targeting trans-national gangs in 2005.""
